Radio Deluxe

GOOD NEWS ON THE DOORSTEPBIG APPLE Double-Header!

If the Pizzarelli family were allowed only one big American city from which to broadcast their celebrated jazz/interview radio show—Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli—produced by Don McCulloch, it’s my belief that John would sing out, “I’ll take Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island too...” In a New York minute.

He would get no argument from 500-plus friends at his NingThing social network, those loyal fans that look forward to the weekly show from their local stations across the nation, the Internet, and tin can walkie-talkies (whatever the effort to hear the show).

But the Big Apple has been elusive for Radio Deluxe™ (though the show is heard in other parts of the state), and considering that New York, New York has long been known as the jazz capital of the world, one would wonder about the hurdles, particularly in light of the fact that the show originates from John and Jessica’s “deluxe living room” high atop Lexington Avenue in New York’s Upper East Side (Silk Stocking District).

The word on the street is that the Big Apple will welcome Radio Deluxe™ to New York, New York’s WBGO 88.3, the world’s premier jazz radio station, though the date has not yet been confirmed. Jazz is their game from the Big Apple with knowledgeable hosts to include: Morning Jazz with Gary Walker, Mid-Day Jazz with Rhonda Hamilton, Evening Jazz with Awilda Rivera, Jazz After Hours with Brian Delp, as well others.

This clearly is what the phenomenal Jessica Molaskey, (with devastating stage presence, where knees buckle and drinks spill) is referring to in her debut within this lovely neighborhood. It’s clear that the Pizzarellis have an appreciation for those that admire their talent, those that spend a great deal of time expressing that sentiment.

If I may expand on her post, I’d just add that the Big Apple was first popularized as a reference to New York City by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of New York Morning Telegraph articles in the 1920s, the earliest of these was a casual reference on May 3, 1921.

However, in May 1920 the citation (Big Apple) appeared in the Chicago Defender, “No, 'Ragtime Billy Tucker' hasn’t dropped completely out of existence, but is still in the ‘Big Apple, Los Angeles.” Thus it is the earliest known use of Big Apple to refer to any city. Nevertheless, some folks doubt that one citation is proof enough that the City of Angles can lay claim to the moniker. Besides, in a February 18, 1924 column under the headline, “Around the Big Apple,” Fitz Gerald declared that, “There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.”

I mention this bit of history to announce that in the city that was likely the first to be called the Big Apple, Los Angeles (for one brief and shining moment), Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli returns to Los Angeles at KKJZ 88, 9 pm Sundays, beginning February 8, 2009. The station boasts some of the finest on-air personalities to include Bob Parlocha, Bubba Jackson, Brad Williams, Helen Borgers, Jazz on the Latin Side with Jose Rizo, and others.

And that’s the name of that tune…

HERE ARE MY COMMENTS TO THIS THING...

It's good to see something good for a change, to finally know for sure that the show is back on the radio from Long Beach. I was so disappointed to read that the show was dropped again, after searching around I see it is back. But then I see the complaining about the way people hear it, not so clear in some places, but the go to your computer. Be thankful that it's in the airs all around. For some the clearness may not be so good, but for many, many peoples, it is very sharp. At least it's back on, and that for which I am giving God thanks.

This writer Barry writes forever, but finally I read it all and it is very good, so happy, and a good story about the big apples to come with it. I have read this guy before and I always feel better when I read his things (I send him emails but I don’t hear from him). He is always happy, calm, and seems to make good comments for us. We needs more like him.

And other people like my friend Doc and all my friends. We are not too far from 600 peoples here, and what a bunch of grumps. And for cripes out loud, how come you don't put your picture. A five year old could put 50 pictures on his site while you are still complaining.

I hear the show every week, but I have never seen the Pizzarelli guy, or his very beautiful wife Jessica. They must be under some witness protection thing. And the whole cast of people from his living room in New York. I would love to go to New York when I can buy a ticket, but I would want to go with a guide, some one person to know everything in the big apple and to tell me everything. I would give most to sit in the famous living room high atop some building on Lexington in the middle of everything.

I have been studying many things plus my English is much better my teacher told me when he took me out for a drink after the last class. But he likes to talk only about the Beach Boys (and more than that, but I ignore him) and he must be maybe fifty years old. That's OK, but the Beach Boys don't do jazz, so I think I will not put him to be my friend on MySpace.

I better stop now or someone would might think I’m trying to write more like this Barry Kunz who goes on and on. But he is a good writer guy, and easy to understand.

My friendship to everybody (I don’t have any new friends for too long),

Carmen Cabrerra
