GOOD NEWS ON THE DOORSTEP… BIG APPLE Double-Header!
If the Pizzarelli family were allowed only one big American city from which to broadcast their celebrated jazz/interview radio show—Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli—produced by Don McCulloch, it’s my belief that John would sing out, “I’ll take Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island too...” In a New York minute.
He would get no argument from 500-plus friends at his NingThing social network, those loyal fans that look forward to the weekly show from their local stations across the nation, the Internet, and tin can walkie-talkies (whatever the effort to hear the show).
But the Big Apple has been elusive for Radio Deluxe™ (though the show is heard in other parts of the state), and considering that New York, New York has long been known as the jazz capital of the world, one would wonder about the hurdles, particularly in light of the fact that the show originates from John and Jessica’s “deluxe living room” high atop Lexington Avenue in New York’s Upper East Side (Silk Stocking District).
The word on the street is that the Big Apple will welcome Radio Deluxe™ to New York, New York’s WBGO 88.3, the world’s premier jazz radio station, though the date has not yet been confirmed. Jazz is their game from the Big Apple with knowledgeable hosts to include: Morning Jazz with Gary Walker, Mid-Day Jazz with Rhonda Hamilton, Evening Jazz with Awilda Rivera, Jazz After Hours with Brian Delp, as well others.
This clearly is what the phenomenal Jessica Molaskey, (with devastating stage presence, where knees buckle and drinks spill) is referring to in her debut within this lovely neighborhood. It’s clear that the Pizzarellis have an appreciation for those that admire their talent, those that spend a great deal of time expressing that sentiment.
If I may expand on her post, I’d just add that the Big Apple was first popularized as a reference to New York City by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of New York Morning Telegraph articles in the 1920s, the earliest of these was a casual reference on May 3, 1921.
However, in May 1920 the citation (Big Apple) appeared in the Chicago Defender, “No, 'Ragtime Billy Tucker' hasn’t dropped completely out of existence, but is still in the ‘Big Apple, Los Angeles.” Thus it is the earliest known use of Big Apple to refer to any city. Nevertheless, some folks doubt that one citation is proof enough that the City of Angles can lay claim to the moniker. Besides, in a February 18, 1924 column under the headline, “Around the Big Apple,” Fitz Gerald declared that, “There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.”
I mention this bit of history to announce that in the city that was likely the first to be called the Big Apple, Los Angeles (for one brief and shining moment), Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli returns to Los Angeles at KKJZ 88, 9 pm Sundays, beginning February 8, 2009. The station boasts some of the finest on-air personalities to include Bob Parlocha, Bubba Jackson, Brad Williams, Helen Borgers, Jazz on the Latin Side with Jose Rizo, and others.
And that’s the name of that tune…
Barry Kunz
Los Angeles (The Big Apple)
