Hi Doc,

Since things are rather slow on the NingThing, I thought I'd spice it up with a new photo. I've put it on my Facebook page as well (you're welcome to visit there as well). I love the hat, an authentic Yellow Cab cap from 1939. You've seen them in so many old movies, back when even the cabbies dressed up a bit with some imbalance of a uniform.

You can't quite see the Natural Lite beer sign behind me, but the Chesterfield ad puts the photo in its proper era.

This site continues to add new members, but so many of them remain faceless. And like you, they see little interaction, and visit little.

Always glad to hear from you, though. If either of us loses track of the other you can add my regular email address to you book if you like, if it’s not already on my page:

barry@moonlightgambler.com.

I’ve got about twenty-five of them and they’re all song titles; an inexpensive hobby.

Stay well and stay in touch.

Best,

Barry

Hi Doc,
I never tire of Ray's "America the Beautiful," and I believe it to be the best interpretation of the work. Clearly he loved this country; you can feel it, and that song will follow me out of the church when I leave this world. Since you mentioned the song, still posted, I notice that my July 4th post of last year is still up. And it still works as well.

I've noticed that you're still pretty active on the site and that's commendable. There are a few that continue to give it life, and you're truly are in the forefront.

I'm inclined to agree with Carmen Cabrerra, that the Pizzarelli's should make an occasional post here, just a few words as to what they are up to. How long can that take? And it would give the site a shot in the arm.

It's 1:30 AM in Los Angeles, and my wife just returned from a big wedding way out at the Trump National Golf Course at Rancho Palos Verde, some plush beach property. Ordinarily I would not attend such a function on a holiday, but it was for the daughter of a good friend. She married some notable NBA player. It was lovely, but took forever to get home.

Stay well and we'll stay in touch. And thanks again for the note.

Best,

Barry

Hi Doc Fleetwood,

Thanks so much for your warm words of welcome! I'm also glad that someone from the area enjoys this fine show. Thank you for the information about the alternate show on Saturday on KMHD. I really enjoy that station. My dad introduced me to the site and was a big fan of KMHD and recorded many of the Dixieland jazz programs. I'm excited about the Pizzarelli program and find it very appealing.

Many thanks again for your kind words.

Best regards,
Ms. Muffin

Hi Doc,
Thanks for the compliments on the guitars.
The jazz box you are referring to is an old Epiphone that I refinished after someone spray painted it! I did a four color sunburst from yellow to red to tobacco to black. You can see more pics at www.myspace.com/retrovjazz.
I love jazz! Barney Kessel and Grant Green are my favorites.
But Bucky and John are sure way up on my list!
There isn't a lot of music that I don't like, but most of what I do like is older.
I don't go past the 70's!
Take care,
John

Hi, Doc
Pleased to meet you in these interesting pages. I know you are one of the main souls of the site, so I am very happy for your kind welcome words.
You're right when you say in Spain we love jazz in spite not having real known players around the world (maybe most popular was pianist Tete Montoliu and saxophonist Pedro Iturralde). But I miss old years, when I could attend concerts of Oscar Peterson, Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie, Modern Jazz Quartet (I keep like real gold their autographs), Sarah Vaughan, Astrud Gilberto, Buddy Rich and many others. I know the new generation is also good, but I cannot miss the old ones. And I feel Pizzarelli is on the line of those classic musicians, that's for I like him very much.
Well, just some words to thank your welcome and wishing you Merry Christmas and the best for the New Year.
Greetings from Spain,
Rafa Sastre.

Hi Doc,
Call me crazy, but I think that this is such a classy site that I'd like to change clothes from time to time, which means post a new photo without changing the scenery. Today it's a black T-shirt that Clayton Moore gave me, another day it might be a T-shirt from my high school in Los Angeles, Cathedral (we were the Phantoms); it matches the hat, so I'd be all purple, but the scenery doesn't change. And one day you'll come upon a photo me without the shades; depends on the weather.

But I won't post a photo of a puppet or animal, I don't care how darling it may be (and nothing against the sweetheart of a pet).

It strikes me that you are one of the more active members, and that means a great deal to Radio Deluxe, and the Pizzarelli package. That’s what I’ve heard from the higher-ups.

Thank you for checking in. I’ve got a pan on every burner, so I’ve been pretty busy, but I regularly check in with my friends here.

Stay well, Doc,

Barry

Hi Doc,

I hope you has to forgive me for not putting a return to your nice long note to me. Too kind you are for helping me want to play the guitar. I was so amazed that a person would be so giving for some help.

I have been away here and there, the beach to sit and look at the people by the beautiful sea and sand. I just sit there under my umbrella to read my novella. My last I was reading "Los Hijos De Sanchez." In English, it's been out in English for many years, but now I read it to help me to learn this language.

Then I go back to my hotel which is very close, but first I stop at a little place for a very cold Superior after the hot beach day. I forget what they call the place. It is like a cantina, but you can get something to eat to, like a bar and grills place.

And the jukebox has the most beautiful music with the Frank Sinatras music kind and some new people who sing those old songs that I am loving so much. But sometimes right when I am listening to something like Michael Buble or Tony Bennett, some guys put on some songs like about bars and trashy women. Then it is time for me to go.

So anyways Doc don't think I am not paying you attention, but I am just to busy with my school studies and hanging up the phone on drunken Mexican cowboys when they call. I have been taking some school in TJ if you was wondering.

I am so thankful for thinking for to help, and some day I will ask you to help with the guitar. You are one the better people on this thing, site, whatever... venue, that is right.

Vaya con Dios
Carmen

Thanks for the welcome! I do enjoy a great glass of wine with music - and will be attending the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in a couple of weeks - have been going for 30 years to this event. The Willamette Valley is one of my favorite places. Was actually up there on the 16th for the weekend and back in late June and July! I expect our paths could actually cross sometime!.

Hi Doc,
It's a bit of a jewel written by Mark Kershner and Larry Rauch, recorded for First Cabin Records™ (unreleased) to be included in a subsequent CD. It will fit nicely in our "Fabulous Places" album (from our upcoming Fabulous Places™ Collection) later in the year. I'll see that you get one.
Best regards, Barry

Hey Doc,
I do plan a road trip to Portland, but likely later in May. Still, I'll get the word out to a few good friends up that way—all of them bona fide music lovers—Don McCulloch, producer of “Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli”; Mark Kershner, a gifted vocalist who does a couple of stunning tracks on our music CD; and Steve Knight, former Los Angeles radio radio personality and restaurant critic. Oregon, so that’s where the smart talent went.
Best, Barry

Hi Doc,

Lovely surprise to receive your note, and thank you for the kind comments about First Cabin Records, a relatively new entity I created for the production and marketing of premium travel music CDs (I call it the Fabulous Places Collection). “A Cozy Bed and Breakfast,” from our first release, “This is the Life,” is likely the first song ever written about a bed and breakfast; it’s a delightful collaboration of four, with most input and creative energy from Mark Kershner and Ray Evans (the Livingston/Evans songbook includes seven Academy Award nominations from which bloomed three Best Song Oscars, including “Mona Lisa”), who blessed us with some fitting and charming lyrics. Such an honor.

The more I visit this site, it becomes clearer that it attracts genuine music fans of all genres and generations, an intriguing array of personalities—talented musicians, vocalists, and writers/composers, as well as those remarkable music lovers that have the same deep kinship with music as do the talent; more so, perhaps, in some cases.

I’m much obliged to John Pizzarella and his better half, Jessica, for the birth of this special community that continues to bring like-minded folks together (as an example, I’m listening to your music, quite extraordinary, as I write). As well, I am deeply grateful to the noted Don McCulloch (and Laura) who is, with a little help from his friends—and there are many—single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of the radio broadcasting of the treasures of America’s greatest songwriters, so often performed by today’s gifted talent. He has been ceaseless for nearly twenty years in the development of Radio Deluxe, and it shows, first cabin all the way.

Kindest regards,
Barry Kunz
